Professional Garden Photographer For Designers, Brands And Press
Every garden design tells a story Share it with the world through professional garden photography
Garden design evolves through a dialogue between the designer, the client and the landscape. It can be a long process, and capturing the results with strong photographs is a natural next step. The moment the garden begins to look as if it has always been there is the perfect time to plan the shoot.
As a professional garden photographer, Joanna Kossak creates atmospheric images that reflect the designer’s vision and the character of the garden. Her garden photography highlights structure, planting and mood so each project is seen at its best.
Hello and Welcome
I’m Joanna Kossak, an award-winning professional garden photographer with more than 25 years of experience in editorial and commercial horticultural photography.
For five years I worked as an in-house photographer at the RHS, creating imagery for press, advertising and commercial campaigns, and photographing major RHS shows. Now a freelance photographer, I work within the horticultural and landscaping industry, collaborating with my clients to create photographs that visually represent their brand identities and resonate with their target audiences.
Whether you’re planning to showcase your garden to new clients, enter awards, or secure press features, let me help you share your project with the world.
Joanna Kossak is a finalist in the prestigious Garden Media Guild Awards in the Features Photographer category for 2025, a recognition that highlights my commitment to high-quality garden photography.
Some gardens are bathed in a golden glow in the morning, others come into their own at sunset. To capture your garden at its best, I aim to photograph it at the time of day that brings out its strongest features. I am also a specialist in garden night photography, capturing atmospheric lighting in gardens after dark. Nothing beats the warmth of a fire pit at night or soft lighting that guides the owners through the garden, allowing for extra time outdoors, especially when the days are shorter.

In urban gardens every detail counts.
I love when plants fill the gaps, soften the edges and bring layers of texture into even the smallest spaces.
Here I’m sharing a few photos from a small urban garden in Wimbledon, photographed in June.

This space stopped me for a moment.
I love the architectural planting and this Arbutus is definitely heading to the top of my favourite plants list. Also the deep green colour of Hakonechloa macra ‘Nicolas’ looks gorgeous in summer. I often see the lime colour varieties in gardens but this deep green is really striking. And what a seat!

A garden paradise in Hampshire
“The dining terrace and curved borders follow the contours of the old carriageway that was once used to reach the house,” and now sit beautifully within the wider garden designed by @taylortrippgardendesign
A little further on, the productive area has its own charm: a mix of edibles, cut flowers and soft seasonal colour, with dahlias, cosmos, sweet peas woven through the beds.
And perhaps the most unexpected feature is the lake “created from scratch on what was once an arable field” yet now it feels as though it has always belonged to the landscape.
I’m absolutely delighted to see this garden featured in the June issue of The English Garden magazine.
Huge thanks to the wonderful designers at @taylortrippgardendesign for their trust and all their help coordinating the shoot, and to the owners for their flexibility and generosity in allowing me to capture the garden.
As always I’m grateful to Clare Foggett for featuring my work in The English Garden magazine, to @gardenwithmartyn for bringing the story to life and also to @a.s.gardens for making the garden look so pristine.

The Lady Garden Foundation ‘Silent No More’ Garden has really drawn me in at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show. Designed by @darrenhawkeslandscapes and built by @lalandscapes .
I loved its Mediterranean feel and the abstract forms that created not only a beautiful backdrop but also guided the eye through the space. A beautifully considered and sculptural garden.
Huge congratulations to Darren Hawkes and all involved on the Gold medal and Best Construction Award.

One of the things I love most about Chelsea Flower Show is the variety of gardens, from large show gardens to the smallest spaces, each with its own atmosphere and story.
Time for Creativity Garden in the All About Plants category shows just how lush a small garden can be when plants are at the heart of it. The planting here is generous and beautifully layered, creating a rich little world within such a small space.
Congratulations to designer @christinacobbgardendesign and @shovel_spadelandscapes on their Gold medal. The garden is just next to Bull Gate, so don’t miss it during your visit.
Delighted to capture this garden for Christina Cobb and Shovel and Spade Landscaping.

When I first saw this garden, it felt like a place where you could pause and feel close to nature, even during the busy Chelsea Flower Show.
Woodland atmosphere, naturalistic planting and a mix of wildness and elegance. I loved how the planting shaped the space without the colours becoming too loud.
Designed by @tomstuartsmith for Chelsea Flower Show 2024, The National Garden Scheme Garden is one of those gardens I still wish I could visit again and again. A Gold Medal winner of course.
Tom Stuart-Smith returns to Chelsea this year with The Tate Britain Garden, a preview of the forthcoming Clore Garden at Tate Britain. I hope you get a chance to see it in person. If not, stay tuned, I’ll be sharing more from the show here.

White foxgloves Digitalis purpurea f. albiflora
Sicilian honey garlic Nectaroscordum siculum
Cow parsley Anthriscus sylvestris
Siberian iris Iris sibirica ‘White Swirl’
